Dooars is A vast texture of dense forests mingled with -------- wildlife , & tea gardens

Babbling rivers interspersed with sleepy or busy settlements constitute a fascinating tourist destination-The Dooars or the Duars. The word Dooars or Duars originated from the word “Duar” in hindi and “Door” in English meaning DOOR signifying the gateway or entry point to Bhutan and the North East India. Dooars can also be called as the gateway to the queen of hills Darjeeling and Sikkim region. Dooars lies in the foothills of the Himalayas and has abundant natural beauty, where streams mature into rivers and flow across the green carpet of Tea Gardens. Dooars or Duars spreads across an area of 4750 sq km of which 1250 sq km is under forest cover and 750 sq km under Tea Gardens. Dooars also is the home to almost seven (7) wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks. The Dooars region is abound in diversity of Flora and Fauna. The mighty Bison, leopard, spotted deer, Sambar, Hogdeer, repltiles, huge wild Tuskers, wild boars, plenty of peacocks and is also a paradise for bird watching. Elephant rides through the forests provides the tourists awith an opportunity to migle with the wildlife. The Dooars is also the home to the Asiatic one horned Rhino which is rarely found in any other part of India. The entire Dooars region is served with a network of roads running through the deep forests and Tea gardens. Dooars is abundant in the splendid gifts of nature and has enormous resources for Eco Tourism.

 

WHAT TO SEE IN DOOARS

GORUMARA NATIONAL PARK

A very big attraction in the dooars region is the Gorumara National Park. It was Established in 1949 as a Wild Life Sanctuary. Later in 1992 it became a National Park. The Gorumara NP spreads across an area of 79 sq km. located on the banks of the Murti and Raidak river the park houses a large variety of Flora and Fauna. Famous for the presence of the Asiatic one horned Rhino, it also preserves the Gaur (Indian Bison), the Asian Elephant, Sloth Bear, Chital and Sambar Deer. One can also watch the wild boar, hog and Barking deer along with some Tigers. The rare Hispid Hare has been reported in the park. The Garumara National Park is also famous for its bird population which includes Scarlet Minivet, Sunbird, Asian paradise flycatcher, Spangled Drongo and great Indian Hornbill, peafowls and Woodpeckers are a common sight. The best way to watch the Wildlife at the park is through the well located watch towers. The towers also give a clear view of the entire park and the neighboring Murti valley. The Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary and the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary lie close to the Gorumara National Park.

 

 

JALDAPARA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary lies in NH 31 in Alipurduar sub-division of Jalpaiguri district. Jaldapara spreads across an area of 216 sq km & lies at an altitude of 200 ft. established in 1941 for protection of Asiatic 1 horned Rhino, Jaldapara later was declared a Sanctuary in the year 1943. mixed deciduous forests, tall grasslands and sandy river banks comprises Jaldapara, which still has remnants of terai grasslands. Jaldapara has the maximum Rhino population after Kaziranga in Assam. It is the home to over 33 species of mammals such as Elephant, Indian Bison, Leopard, Spotted, barking, and hog Deer, Sloth Bear, Sambhar and a few Bengal tigers. It has over 240 species of birds including creted eagle, paradise flycatcher, peafowl, patridges, racket tailed drongo, shikra, Bengal florican, and lesser pied hornbill. Pythons, lizards, krates, cobras, geckos are among the 16 species of reptiles found in Jaldapara. Activities such as Elephant rides & jeep safari are held on a regular basis. On one of such activities one can spot deers running around or Rhinos playing in the muddy pond. While on a visit to Jaldapara one can visit the ruins of Nal King in Chilapata Forest called NALER RAJAR GARH. It holds great historical and archeological importance, being built in the 5 century during the Gupta Empire. One can also visit Totopara , a village of the local tribes.

CHAPRAMARI

Lying on the foothills of Eastern Himalayas on NH 31 is Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. Chapramari lies in the District of Jalpaiguri and is about 20 kms from Gorumara National Park and 30 kms from Chalsa. Chapramari spreads across an area of -------kms amd is famous for the elephant population it holds. Gaur also known as the Indian Bison is also found in abundance. Some Royal Bengal Tigers have also been spotted in this region. Deer, Leopard, and many other species of reptiles are also found in Chapramari. It is also famous for bird watching.
